5packGood News, Everyone!!!  QZAP got new buttons!  Head over to the QZAP store (to your left) to order one.  We updated the classic "Zinesters" design, and added 3 new ones.  Go us!

Also, as you may have heard, our participation in the SOPA/PIPA black-out was great.  The bills have been stopped (for now, at least) so we can keep on keepin' on with our whole queer zine archiving thing.

January started out great for us, and 2012 is only going to get better.  The newest member of the collective managed to get 17 zines scanned and uploaded in the space of about 6 days.  Thanks, Patricia!

Now we're gearing up for the Chicago Zine Fest at the beginning of March and working on a few other projects, as well.  Stay tuned...

silencedeathOn Wednesday, January 18, 2012 QZAP will be joining numerous other websites like Wikipedia, Reddit, and BoingBoing by “going dark” in protest of the SOPA and PIPA legislation that is working its way through the United States Congress at the moment.

While SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is temporarily on hold, PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) is of equal worry.  Both bills would have the effect of killing QZAP.  

For the past 8 years our collective has spent countless hours working to preserve queer zines and print ephemera and make them available so that artists, activists, scholars, and enthusiasts can enjoy and learn from the vast, often un-noticed written and printed history created by other queers from around the world.  

We fully recognize that a lot of the material housed in QZAP is “dangerous.”  Some of the zines deal with material that make folks uncomfortable, that challenge the way people think about any number of topics relating to queers and our lives.  While we’re pretty open as individuals and a collective, some of the content in the zines make *us* uncomfortable.  Ultimately, though, free speech and free press doesn’t have to be popular or happy.  It does have to be free, though.  It needs to be seen and heard.  That’s why QZAP exists.

The majority of the zines in our digital archive were not created by QZAP collective members, and are presented under the “Fair Use” provisions of the U.S. Copyright code.  To the best of our ability we give full credit and ownership to the original creators, and actively seek permission from them (when possible) for the documents to be placed online.  A single bogus take-down notice (like the one we received in 2005) could effectively silence all that we and the hundreds of zinesters who have dared to commit themselves to print have worked for.

New Year, New Zines!

Read Queer Zines!When we last left our story, Chris was heading to New York City to represent at a benefit being thrown for QZAP by the wonderful folks from Que(e)ry Librarians.  We're happy to report that the event was an amazing success!  They raised over $1,000 for us, threw a party that will be talked about for months to come, and basically made our year.  If you were there, or want to help support them in their efforts to help LGBTQ library groups, please let them know how appreciated they are.

After that rousing little jaunt QZAP was an active participant in organizing and attending the Milwaukee Zine Fest.  As it happened, that may have been the last big zine event of 2011.  Fear not, though... We're already planning the 2012 MZF, and also getting ready to head to the Chicago Zine Fest in March.

Toward the end of December we took several days to get the archive in order.  We filed and organized a couple hundred zines that had accumulated and got prepared for a ten day intensive student internship.  We're in the middle of said internship right now, and zines are being scanned and uploaded on a daily basis.  Some choice titles include: Imp, Queers Make Music, Mutate #4, and a whole bunch of single-page flyers.  Yet there's still more to come!  So please stick around, read some queer zines, and have a gay old time!
